Riddley Walker

A heart-rending view of a post-apocalyptic future England. Other books (mosy notably, "A Canticle for Leibowitz") present the thesis that even if mankind manages to *almost* destroy itself someday, it probably won't teach us enough of a lesson to stop making war. This book is a coming-of-age tale of an adolescent who begins to understand why this particular flaw in human nature exists. "Riddley Walker" may have lost some of its relevance at the end of the Cold War, but it's worth reading for the magical language alone. It's a slow starter, but once you get in, I promise you'll find it hard to stop.
