I read this a long time ago and probably released it somehow/somewhere, but I wanted to read it again, so got another copy.

Interesting to note that I first read this book almost exactly 10 years ago:

9 out of 10
This was the first book by Kris Radish that I had ever read, and I fell in love with her style of writing. She has a unique flair for weaving tales involving numerous dynamic women from various walks of life who are all able to relate to each other, if for no other reason, just because they are women. This unusual tale of a traveling funeral will grab your heart and take you along for the ride.

I'm re-reading it now, and will see if I still have the same assessment :)

I read this book once many years ago when it first came out, and must've really had different taste or expectations back then, because I liked it then and pretty much hated it now.

The long, overdone, overflowery, endless sentences that go nowhere were exhausting. You could go pages and literally get nowhere in a conversation or a plot. I can appreciate some imagery or descriptive prose, but this was TOO MUCH. I wanted to read PLOT, I wanted to read STORY. Tell me what's happening with these women, not what they're thinking all the damn time. Ugh.

Also, way too many coincidences. Everything happens at "exactly that moment" across time zones for numerous people at the same time. Women have the same exact dream at night. Strangers materialize to pay for everything in the world. Random overworked airline workers give them numerous free international first class tickets due to a weather delay (20 year airline employee here -- that would NEVER happen and reading it made me laugh out loud at its ridiculousness). COME ON. It's so stupid. Oh, and while we're at it -- you simply cannot make or take a cell phone call on an airplane at 25,000 feet. You can use one of the dumb airphones that may have possibly still been installed when this book was published in 2006, but definitely not a cell phone. You also can't take 3 bottles of champagne onto a plane. I'll give the author a little bit of a pass on that considering the liquid ban was imposed in September of 2006, so this book was likely published before then.

There were too many characters, and honestly I didn't really like or care about any of them. And they all form amazing, soul-baring, life-changing relationships within 4 minutes of knowing each other. Again, COME ON. Women are amazing, but not that amazing.

What I really wanted to read about was the traveling. The PLACES they went, and what they discovered about WHY Annie wanted them to go there. But the women were in each place for a sum total of one day. ONE DAY? Are you kidding me? We can spend days talking about a dream or our feelings, but one day in Key West? So dumb. Oh, and also, when using lengthy flower prose to describe the Florida Keys, it's best to consult a map first. If you're going to say the characters were driving over a long bridge, you should have them stay in a guest house somewhere on the OTHER side of the actual long bridge (the Seven Mile Bridge is on the SOUTH end of the Keys). They stayed on Islamorada, which is on the NORTH end of the Keys, and there are no "long bridges" between Miami and Islamorada. Accuracy matters.

Overall, I pretty much hated this book this second time I read it. The story had promise, which is the only reason I'm not giving it 1 star. I do feel the "idea" of a traveling funeral has merit.

Because part of this book is set in the Florida Keys, I'm going to release this in Key West on an upcoming trip. I will update with details once I have them.
