This beautiful and passionately honest memoir opened my soul for healing. It is filled with love and lessons in loving. Buechner here is a middle-aged man, dealing with the pain of his relationship with his mother and with fear for his anorexic daughter's life. He must come to terms with things beyond his control. This is the second in Buechner's memoir series. It was the first of his books that I read and it made me a devotee of his work. A beloved writer, Rev. Buechner died earlier this month at 96. He was from a privileged Northeastern background. His upbringing did not include any kind of religious orientation. As a young novelist of no particular faith who just happened into a Presbyterian Church one day because it was in his neighborhood, Buechner was converted by the message he heard coming from the pulpit. Having had no experience of Christianity before, he felt deeply compelled to learn. So he went to seminary and became an ordained minister. Though he had two vocations, his work was primarily literary. I have collected his books for years and will re-read them. I found this copy yesterday at a favorite used bookstore. It belonged once to a local minister who left his congregation here in Georgia for missionary work in India.
