This was my first introduction to Paul Auster's books... a friend passed it along.

English professor, David Zimmer, is nudged out of the despair and grief that has engulfedhim since the sudden death of his wife and two children by the performance of Hector Mann, an obscure comic actor from the silent film era. Zimmer tracks down Mann's other films and writes a book about them. Mann had disappeared suddenly in the late nineteen twenties and was presumed to have died. Soon after the book is published, though, Zimmer gets a letter from a woman claiming to be Mann's wife. She says that Hector is alive and wants to meet Zimmer.

A good story, cleanly written.

I will definitely look for more of Auster's books.
