From the back cover:

"Sephy is a Cross – a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a nought – a ‘colourless’ member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that’s as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Cross schools… Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum – a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger…"

I'd been meaning to read this for ages and then took part in a book exchange where you send someone your favourite ever book and this was one of the ones I got given.

It was fascinating to see the world reimagined in this way, giving black people all the advantages and privileges usually associated with being white. The story telling was a little heavy handed at times but overall I really enjoyed the book.

I remember seeing people reading this book when I was back in College and I've always been curious about it. Thank you for sending it to me :)

I liked this book, but it didn't wow me like I was expecting it to. I had to keep forcing myself to pick it up. Great idea for a plot though. I can see why people think so highly of the book. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read this when I was a teenager.

I liked Sephy and Callum was alright but I didn't find their love story that believable. And I'm guessing since there are more books to the series, the ending didn't really happen like it's trying to get you to belive.

I'm not going to seek out the rest in the series, but if they ever came my way, I would read them.

**edit 13.10.22** In a wonderful example of serendipity, a few days later I was gifted tickets to see this on stage at the Yvonne Arnaud theatre in Guildford. I loved the play, the actors were amazing and really brought it to life!
