When her mother, Eve, tells Liza that she must leave their remote home, the gatehouse of a country mansion, Liza is terrified.
"The claustrophobic nature of the story is brought across really well in the atmosphere, tone, and overall description."

Book arrived today. No. 98 in the sweepstakes. I'm amazed I'm still getting some. Thanks, nikel27.

I had just finished reading a book by this author and liked it, so when this one arrived, I had to read it right away. I was not disap-pointed. I could understand the young woman knowing nothing of the outside world, being raised in isolation by her mother. But I found it a bit strange that she threw herself at the first young man that came along, seeing that she wasn't used to people, either. But it was still a good book.

This book will be going to New Zealand in an M-Bag.

Journal Entry 8 by nekki2976 from Mumford, New York USA on Friday, February 11, 2005
I got this box of books today. Since it was the last set I was waiting on, the Mbag (or perhaps a quicker method) will be going out to New Zealand on Monday.

A huge sack of books arrived today - too late for the convention, unfortunately, but they'll still be greatly appreciated by the Christchurch Bookcrossers, and a few might end up travelling over to Australia for the Brisbane convention in June.

Another one I'm tempted to add to Mt. TBR (I really am trying not to take more than my share!!!)

Many thanks lovemylife, and nekki!

This is a very strange book, but a good one. It had an air of Iain Banks about it - perhaps it's just the child growing up in very unusual circumstances thing. There were a few aspects of what Liza did and didn't understand/know that didn't ring entirely true, and like lovemylife I found her relationship with Sean a bit unlikely, but otherwise a very captivating and thought-provoking story.

I like a good Ruth Rendell story. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't so much a murder mystery but a story about interesting people with interesting lifestyle choices.

Journal Entry 18 by marcienz from Kimbell, Canterbury New Zealand on Thursday, November 5, 2009
Sorry about yesterday's false alarm.

I realised that I could use this for a themed release at Gatehouse vineyard, since a lot of the book is set in the Gatehouse of an English estate.

The vineyard doesn't have a Gatehouse - the name of the owners is Gatehouse.

A great holiday read. I always enjoy a good Ruth Rendell and this one was a little different to others I have read (they have been more of the thriller genre than the psychological angle of this book) but still a very enjoyable read.
