How could I possibly rate "Mort" only a six? Well... this comic-book abridgement of Pratchett's wonderful Discworld book crams so many incidents into so brief a space that I fear it would be completely incomprehensible to anyone who hadn't read the book first. [I may be wrong here, but I had a bit of trouble following the comic and I have read the book!]

The illustrations by Graham Higgins are decent, and the way some of the scenes are rendered is quite entertaining - Death telling new apprentice Mort "I COULD MURDER A CURRY!", for example. But without the background explanations from the book, there just seems to be too much happening too quickly... I'd have to say this would be of interest only to Pratchett fans who already know the story.

I'm offering this on CasualReader's book relay site, on the Graphics and Manga relay. (I've added a condition that the taker trade/relay/bookring the book after reading it, because I don't think the book would be very enjoyable - much less understandable - as a wild release, unless the finder happened to already have read "Mort: the book"!)

*** Controlled release:

The book's been claimed by midwinter, on daidy's behalf; it's on its way to Michigan!

I have to agree with Gory, this would be completely incomprehensible if you've not already read the book. It's been a while since I read Mort, and I had to really concentrate not to lose the thread of the story while I read this.

I'm SO excited to be reading this book! I enjoyed the book Mort, so I'm hoping that I will enjoy the comic book. Will read soon and pass on to MSO!

Well, I'm afraid I have to agree with GoryDetails and Daidy on this book. While I enjoyed seeing a Pratchett book illustrated, I found that the plot was a bit thin. If I hadn't read Mort (the actual book) before, I would have been a bit lost. I also thought the editing took away a lot of the parts of the book that I found really funny.

The illustrations are good, but I prefer Kirby's renderings of Discworld a bit easier on the eyes and more enjoyable.

Still a good read, but slightly disappointing. Will be passing on to MSO.

I haven't read Mort yet but I still enjoyed the comic though I felt there were some abrupt cuts in the story. This is probably an excuse to go read the book to find out what really happens! :)
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read it! This book was already returned to MSO.

I completely and utterly forgot about this book! I was totally mystified when the package showed up because I didn't think there were any books en route to me... what a pleasant surprise! I like the illustrations, but just skimming over some of the text I'll agree that the dialogue seems a bit... disjointed? I read the novel already though, so I'll just fill in the blanks :)

Well, I really liked it! I would've been totally lost if I hadn't read the book, but since I remember the story very clearly, it all flowed nicely and made sense to me, so I didn't have a problem with that. Some of the jokes fell a bit flat without the buildup though, which was unfortunate. I LOVED the illustrations, especially Death in his apron, which is the image I most vividly recall from all the Discworld books. Also, Death sitting in the theatre, laughing uproariously while his neighbours look at him askance, and the kewl hidden skull image on pg. 40 (look at the archway in the topmost picture). Each time I go through it I see something new... and kudos to Higgins for drawing every one of those little hourglasses!

Thanks for sharing! I definitely must buy this book now :)

Would you believe this was my first foray into the world of Terry Pratchett? Sad, but true. I've heard a lot about this author, thought a GN would be a good start. I was right. I'll be sending this on to Aisore on Tues. as part of a bookring.
