Journal Entry 5 by Eucalia from Issaquah, Washington USA on Friday, July 30, 2004
This book is now part of a bookray!

This bookray is currently open. PM me if you'd like to join.
The following is the current list of members. The list is subject to change.

1. lonerunner (PA) anywhere
2. q-cow (Phillipines) anywhere
3. SasquatchBR (Brazil) anywhere
4. Lerita (Argentina) anywhere
5. affinity4books (TX) US pref
6. BigJohnLefty (IA) anywhere
7. jkiehle (NY) US pref <---it's on its way here!

A bookray is when a book is sent from one person to another through a list of members who have signed up for it. When the last person on the list receives the book they can do with it as they choose--start a new ray or ring, release it into the wild, give it to a friend--whatever!

Here are the guidelines for this bookray:

1. When the person before you on the list is done reading the book they will send you a personal message (PM) asking you for your address. If you feel that you are too busy at that time to read the book within a reasonable time period (about 1 month), ask that person to skip you and go to the next person on the list. If this happens, PM me to let me know what’s going on and, if you want, I may be able to move you down the list so you can try again later.

2. When you receive the book, make a journal entry letting everyone know where the book is. Keep in mind that there are other people waiting to read the book after you, so try not to take too long to read it. A general rule of thumb is to have the book in your possession for no longer than one month. If you know you won’t be able to get to the book within a month, pass it on to the next person on the list, PM me letting me know, and I can move you down the list so you can try again later if you’d like. If you’re reading the book and it’s taking you longer than expected to finish, make a journal entry letting everyone know! Remember, there’s no such thing as too many journal entries.

3. When you’re done (or almost done) reading the book, send a PM to the next person on the list asking for their address. Even if you think you already know that person’s address, it’s a good idea to double-check to make sure their address hasn’t changed—and also make sure the list order hasn’t changed since you checked it last. If the next person on the list doesn’t respond to your PM within several days, try again. If you still get no response within one week, PM me to let me know what’s going on and then skip this person and try the next person on the list.

4. After you’ve finished the book, journal a quick review of it for us letting us know what you thought of it!

5. Send the book to the next person on the list and post a journal entry letting everyone know it’s on its way. Sit back, relax, and watch the journals as the book completes its journey!

Just received this Vonnegut gem in the mail today:)
Thank you, Eucalia, I'm looking forward to it!

Journal Entry 8 by lonerunner from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania USA on Wednesday, August 18, 2004
This book was a LOT of fun to read--laugh-out-loud funny! Vonnegut always pokes fun at human nature, and this novel focuses on a family with an obscene amount of inherited wealth, the Rosewater Foundation. Elliot Rosewater is the head of the foundation, and he has a heart of gold--and is considered insane by the rest of his family, and at least very unusual by others. It's a parody of society's attitudes towards money: those who have it, and those who don't. Oh, and a character from Slaughterhouse Five makes a reappearance:) Thanks, Eucalia, for sharing!!

It was very true but very uninteresting at some times. The books by Trout sounded interesting.

Journal Entry 12 by SasquatchBR from São Paulo, São Paulo Brazil on Thursday, October 28, 2004
Just arrived this morning...
I'm looking forward to reading it. :-)
Thanks, q-cow, and sorry for all the trouble!! I just moved and this made things a little difficult for us, but, hey, it's here!

Journal Entry 13 by SasquatchBR from São Paulo, São Paulo Brazil on Thursday, November 18, 2004
Great book. Quite funny indeed, nicely written... I was particularly touched by the way it goes from mind to mind to mend a whole interesting story where everybody's surely suffering from the insane rules of our world... Irony is a great way to pun with idiotic people that fails to understand how sick our world is, and prefer to think they're the best. I enjoyed this immensely. Felt avenged a little bit. Thanks a lot, Eucalia.

I'm contacting Lerita for her address...

Since Monday the book is on its way to Argentina. As I said on my PM to Lerita, it's a pleasure to finally get in touch with someone there... The media here in Brazil always try to push us to be rivals and enemies of Argentina, but it's some dumb stupid strategy to sell newspapers. I don't fall for that.

Thanks a lot, Eucalia, for the kind words and for setting the bookring up!

All the best to all of you,
Happy readings

Journal Entry 15 by Lerita from Nuñez, Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Capital Federal) Argentina on Friday, November 26, 2004
It's here!!! The book arrived today, with a very nice postcard from Brazil. It looks great, i'll make an entry after I read it.

Journal Entry 16 by Lerita from Nuñez, Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Capital Federal) Argentina on Sunday, December 12, 2004
This book made a nice read. What stands out, in my opinion, is the irony. I think that the way Vonnegut handles the ironies makes a great difference in this story.

I appreciated the laughs too. I found myself laughing out loud on several ocassions!

Another remarkable thing, is that everything seems so updated... the society that it portrays, seems to reflect ours consistently, even though the book was written in 1965. Isn't that amazing? It feels like so many technological advances and science developments aren't really helping us to imporve socially. We live in a world ruled by economics, and if this book's criticism seemed fair in it's time, it's no less appropiate on our days.

Here is my quote:

"The therapist, after a deeply upsetting investigation on normality at this time and place, was bound to conclude that a normal person, functioning well on the upper level of a prosperous, industrialized society, can hardly hear his conscience at all." (Pg.43)

Thanks to KV for putting this to words! And thank you fellow BCssers for sharing it!
I am sending it to affinity4books.

Journal Entry 17 by affinity4books from Bryan, Texas USA on Sunday, December 26, 2004
This arrived on Friday, but in all the holiday excitement I haven't had a chance at the computer before now. I just read the first few pages and it looks good. I am in the last half of another book right now, so I should get to this one within the week. Thanks all for sharing.

Journal Entry 18 by affinity4books from Bryan, Texas USA on Monday, January 3, 2005
I agree with Lerita that this book reflects today's society really well, even though it was written forty years ago! It had funny moments and some insightful comments on the way we live. I found myself wanting to know Sylvia better. I think her character could have been develped more. After reading several of his early works now, I think I enjoy Vonnegut's later works (Galapagos, Timequake) more. Thanks for the chance to read this one!

I have the next person's address, so I will mail it today or tomorrow.

Journal Entry 21 by BigJohnLefty from Des Moines, Iowa USA on Monday, January 10, 2005
Although this was probably the third time I'd read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Vonnegut has a lot to say about greed, sanity, altruism and other aspects of the human spirit.
This is one of his lesser-known works, but anybody who enjoyed Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five will like this as well.

I love everything Kurt Vonnegut. Picked this up from a friend. Will either be passing it to my mother-in-law to continue its journey or it will be released into the wild.
