Took me a while to get into this, but once I did it was impossible to put down. Not an easy read: Atlanta in 1974 is full of racism, discrimination, and hatred. All the characters are flawed in some way; some you can root for, and others are just plain evil.

I haven't read any of Slaughter's "series" books, but am glad I read this stand-alone.

Amazon:
Atlanta, 1974: As a brutal murder and a furious manhunt rock the city’s police department, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the job will also be her last. She’s determined to defy her privileged background by making her own way—wearing a badge and carrying a gun. But for a beautiful young woman, life will be anything but easy in the macho world of the Atlanta PD, where even the female cops have little mercy for rookies. It’s also the worst day possible to start given that a beloved cop has been gunned down, his brothers in blue are out for blood, and the city is on the edge of war.

Kate isn’t the only woman on the force who’s feeling the heat. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When she and Kate, her new partner, are pushed out of the citywide search for a cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach the boiling point. With a killer poised to strike again, they will pursue their own line of investigation, risking everything as they venture into the city’s darkest heart.

Relentlessly paced, acutely observed, wickedly funny, and often heartbreaking, Cop Town is Karin Slaughter’s most powerful novel yet—a tour de force of storytelling from our foremost master of character, atmosphere, and suspense.

This is another dark thriller from Karin Slaughter - this one is set in Atlanta in 1974, a time when there was still rampant racism and sexism (among other less obvious-isms). While there are the beginnings of equity within the police department - both female and people of color have been hired as officers - the road that they are traveling is difficult and the all-male, white boys club is not going to make it easier.

So when Kate (not only female, but a Jew and from a wealthy section of the city) starts on the job on a day when a beloved officer was shot and his partner killed, well, she’s already up against the odds. The women already on the job are less than welcoming, partly as defense, partly to “toughen” the rookie up. But Kate’s luck has her partnered first with Jimmy, the shot officer, and then with Maggie, his sister. Talk about a trial by fire. This family is the very definition of dysfunctional and the shooting does not help. They are not supportive of Maggie, even as she uncovers evidence that points to a serial cop killer.

This novel takes on the seedy underside of Atlanta - there’s drugs and rape and prostitution and other unsavory elements as we see the racism and sexism that was a part of the life in the South (and elsewhere) in this time….and *some* call these the good ole days. Only for some. Male. White. Wealthy or with some other advantage. I started in what was considered a “man’s job” in the late 70s and was told I was taking a job away from a man who needed to feed his family. (I was a pharmacist for about 45 years and, for some of them, was the primary breadwinner so I guess I got the last laugh.) I can’t even fathom how much harder this would be in a system where the power structure was so concentrated and controlled. Not to mention the women with multiple strikes (women of color, Jewish) - you had to have a thick skin to survive.

But survive they do….in typical Slaughter fashion. It’s a great ride. Recommended.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

A little bonus RABCK - I like Karin Slaughter, her novels are thrilling if a little dark and sometimes graphic. This one is a quick read, set in the early 70s. Enjoy or release!
