This has to be the definitive book on "dark money". Dark money is the term used to describe the use of hidden money sources to manipulate the electorate.

Mayer takes us from its beginnings during the Cold War, with Richard Mellon Scaife, through the inventive use of 501(c)(4) organizations, to the present, where any means that can be bought are used. The detailed explanations and citations serve to set this on solid ground; this is not one person's crusade; it is based on facts.

The edition I have has a 2017 preface, which explains how Trump ridiculed the Koch brothers during his campaign, then readily brought in advisors and cabinet members direct from Koch secret meetings. It's not surprising that many Americans are confused; it's a complicated story.

The book is well written, absorbing, compelling. Highly recommended.
