This book has been sitting on Mount ToBeRead for ages, and if I'd known how great it was I would have moved it to the top.
The description and atmosphere created by Carter have a truly magical quality that you might remember from reading books in your childhood - however the action of the book is far from mawkish.
In the first part of the book the child protagonist is becoming a woman and in this moment of momentous physical and psychological alteration, is bereaved and orphaned.
She goes to live with her mute aunt and step family - and her harsh experiences there constrast sharply with the idyllic unquestioning circumstances of her former life.
The first part of the book is bathed in moonlight and sparkle, the second in fire and blood.
I LOVED this book and will be looking for another hard back copy for my Permanent Collection.

Is this a fairy tale in modern telling, or a modern tale with fairytale settings? Whatever it is, it is a nervous pleasure to read.
Many of the elements of fairytales are here: fantastic creatures; a dark, imprisoning castle; a bestial, sexually threatening male; wild and beautiful spirits; a young virgin rescued by her own wits. The action is obviously symbolic, yet the emotional intelligence it provides is real and recognizable.
The moral of the tale is more complex: the heroine lives, if not happily, then as best she can ever after. She overthrows one tyrant, but not all. It is easy to see why Angela Carter has become an anti-patriarchal saint. Her writing is beautiful, convincing, and savage all at once.

Got back from vacation today and found this fun one waiting for me. Will read as soon as possible.
Sorry to be solong in reading this one. I must confess I have picked it up and put it down several times. Buy, I finally perservered and finshed it. Not one of my favorite reads by any means, but it containes many elements of traditional fairy tales.
Contacting next person for address and should be mailing out Monday.
Thanks for passing it along.

Very strange but wonderful book. I especially enjoyed Carter's vivid descriptions. Will be looking out for more books by her.

Great writing, very compelling and convincing, though I found the ending a little disappointing. All in all an excellent read though. Will get this moving asap.

Well, I finally read this book. Was surprised to see I had not journalled it.. I really thought I did. It was a lil tough to keep reading... I felt like I was waiting for something that never came. But enjoyable just the same. Not sure what to do with it next.
I added this book to the Bookbox full of places.
