I love this book. Roberta is a divorcee with 3 children returning to her small home town in Camden, Maine in 1916 - a time where divorce is almost a crime which a proper woman would never contemplate.
However, it is because of women like Roberta that we now have Women's Liberation and hence be thankful that we no longer have to depend on a man for everything, like wait for them to bring home the bread, or go around unescorted without setting tongues wagging or be frowned upon because we want to buy a car for our own use.
It is amazing how far women of today have come in less than a century when we would have faced censure and ostracism for what we take for granted in our daily lives now.
I'm glad that Roberta has the courage to face them down without shame and that she at least have her daughters, Gabriel and his family and the Dumosses behind her if not her own mother and sister.
