Therese is just an ordinary sales assistant working in a New York department store when a beautiful, alluring woman in her thirties walks up to her counter. Standing there, Therese is wholly unprepared for the first shock of love. Therese is an awkward nineteen-year-old with a job she hates and a boyfriend she doesn't love; Carol is a sophisticated, bored suburban housewife in the throes of a divorce and a custody battle for her only daughter. As Therese becomes irresistibly drawn into Carol's world, she soon realises how much they both stand to lose...

A lovely surprise to receive this book, as I really wanted to see the film at the cinema & was annoyed that I missed it due to other commitments. I love Todd Haynes films, but had no idea this film was an adaptation of a Patricia High smith novel! I've read most of Highsmith's books too, so no idea how I didn't pick up on that - doh! So now I shall have the pleasure of reading the book first & then watch the film when it's released on DVD.

Thanks again for the wonderful Valentine gifts!

Really enjoyed this haunting & atmospheric love story. Not over blown or melodramatic, just a moving story of the relationship between a mature sophisticated woman & a naive, unfulfilled younger woman in 1950s New York. Shall look forward to seeing the film version now, Cate Blanchett is perfect for the role of Carol!
