Picked up at Borderlands in San Francisco.
I chose this book because the author was recommended to me by a friend - and what a find, I will definitely be looking for more of her books.
Wells sets her story in a world which is post-apocalyptic, but not the kind of apocalypse we are used to thinking of (not Earth, not weapons or war related). Rather, civilisation was all but wiped out by the Waste, leaving a few cities as islands in a poisonous desert. Khat - an outsider and trader of relics - is asked by a Patrician to assist in a journey which ends up being even more dangerous than anticipated. Who can be trusted, and what is the true object of Khat's new employer?
Wells' characters are believable and the story moves at a cracking pace, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader well and truly intrigued.
