Picked up for $1 at The Book Cellar on York Avenue in New York City.
I love Diana Wynne Jones. She has a particularly whimsical style which I greatly enjoy. I will happily read anything she has written just to get to experience that.
However, while this book is a cute idea, and worth a read, it is not one of her best stories. It concerns Sirius, a "high effulgency", ie a denizen of a significant star (sphere). Sirius has been accused of killing another denizen and losing a special tool (the Zoi). That might normally carry a sentence of execution. Instead, he is sentenced to be born as a creature on the world on which the Zoi has fallen - Earth. If he dies as that creature before he finds the Zoi, he will die.
Sirius is born as a dog, and so the main story commences.
Again, the book is a cute idea, and Wynne Jones clearly knew her cats and dogs. It is a fun read for that alone. And the main story is well-crafted. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's just not one of her best!
