I bought this on 1/24 at McHenry (IL) Library's book sale for 50 cents.

c. 1928 -- 222 pages -- Paperback -- a Signet Classic -- #63 on the Radcliffe Publishing 100 Best Novels list -- with an Afterword by Elizabeth Bowen -- includes the original illustrations

Back Cover: Spanning three and a half centuries of boisterous, exuberant adventure in England, in Constantinople, with aristocrats and gypsies -- first as a man and then as a woman -- Orlando's story is a wild farce, a humorous history, a gay romance filled with the delightful experiences of one of the most fascinating and fantastic characters ever to rule the realm of fiction. David Daiches said: "Virginia Woolf can afford to rest her claims on her novels, which show her to be one of the half-dozen novelists of the present century whom the world will not easily let die." Rebecca West called "Orlando" "a poetic masterpiece of the first rand" and Elizabeth Bowen found it "one of the most high spirited books I know ... a book for those who are young in a big way."

COMMENTS: (May contain Spoilers) ... Spans a time period from 1588 to 1928 and takes the hero, Orlando, from being a handsome boy of 16 to Lady Orlando (age 36), experiencing historical insights through encounters with figures of the time. It does tend to be a bit confusing (until you get the hang of it) how Orlando lives through 340 years, yet only ages 20. I must give Woolf credit for dealing with transgender in the 20s. And BRAVO to the book for remaining a Classic through these anti-LGBT years. Orlando falls asleep for 7 days at the age of 30 and wakes up a woman. Later when she meets Harriet/Harry, she is said to always be a man, however dressed as a woman for love of Orlando. Once you can grasp these two concepts, the book is a fascinating read.
