About the Author
Unity Dow was the first appointed Botswanian female High Court judge, and has a long record as a human rights attorney. Born in Botswana, she came from a rural background that tended toward traditional values of the African kind. Her mother could not read English, and in most cases decision-making was done by men.
Her Western education caused a mixture of respect and suspicion.

About the Book
2001
Far and Beyon' tells the story of a family's struggle to cope with the devastation of HIV and poverty. Reeling from the loss of a second son to AIDS, Mara turns to traditional magic to fight the curse she believes is destroying her family. Her children, Mosa and Stan, increasingly reject such beliefs, choosing instead to fight the powerlessness and oppression that have made the family so vulnerable to HIV. In the process, they must challenge adult authorities and scrutinize the ways in which they unwittingly consent to the forces that constrict them.

My Review:
I counted this book for AFRICA: Botswana for the 666 for 2015 - An Around the World Reading Challenge .
I really enjoyed this book, although at the beginning there is a rush of characters and it almost feels like you'll be unable to decipher them all going forward.
This was certainly an eye-opening book for me, with regards to the attitude towards AIDS and acceptance and disregard of the treatment of young schoolgirls.
For those reasons its hard to believe that this coming of age story has some feel good moments, but it does.
The underlining strength of the story is family and it truly sweeps you into feeling a true connection to your own views on womens' rights.

A lot of threads to this story, which took me a long time to read despite its relative thinness. It was an interesting exposure to traditional customs, education of children, the role of women, and death.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

A very delayed prize arriving for the “authors from unusual countries” sweepstake winner (Dec 2019). This book me rather a long time to complete once I started. It is definitely worth reading, I suggest you read it in longer sessions than I had available.

If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.

Wow, what a nice surprise to have this on my mailbox today, after 3 weeks away in the country (working from home does give us this great liberties ;)) I didn't even remember I still had something to receive from that sweeps! Thank you so very much, kiwiinengland, you made my day!
Also, I have never read anything fro Botswana (and not so much as all that from african countries in general, except for portuguese speaken africa). I'm sure it will make a great reading.
Even if I became a very slow reader with the pandemic... I'm guessing I did read a lot while commuting. Anyway, I'll get there eventually ;)
