What an incredible book! I must confess that I had trouble listening to the homily at Easter mass yesterday because I was thinking about Mary Magdalene and what the real truth about her is.

I thought this quote from page 256 was particularly interesting:
"... history is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books - books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe. As Napoleon once said, 'What is history, but a fable agreed upon?'"

This is an exciting and very suspensful book. It will keep you turning the pages. My bets are on it becoming a motion picture soon! Enjoy and happy reading!

I can well understand why this book has catapulted to the top of the bestseller's lists. It is exciting, suspenseful, and filled with wonderful historical details that are both a testament to the author's imagination and meticulous research. The excess of historical details however, and the author's tendency to insert flashback passages while the characters are on the verge of discovering something important, can be distracting. And that's what has kept this book from being a 10 for me.

looking forward to this

Loved it. Although it didn't 'reveal' anything really shocking or anything I didn't already know or suspect, being a divine female myself ; ) Serioulsy though, aside from the sheer pleasure of the excellent suspense thriller story, there is a wonderful, beautiful message for all of us human types in this book. It left me feeling very sad for the patht he world has taken, and yet hopeful that the path can still change.

Off to England next, just PM'd 'perfect-circle' for address.

Arrived in the UK today. Unfortunately, however, my OH bought a copy just before Christmas and I've already read it. My journal is here, if you're interested.

I will be posting it to reissilvia as soon as I have an address.

This arrived safely in the post today. My first 'catch' and I am very excited by it! Will start reading as soon as I've finished my book group read!

Journal Entry 16 by iggi1812 from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Sunday, March 27, 2005
I've started reading and am hooked!

It shouldn't be long before it starts its journey again!

Journal Entry 17 by iggi1812 from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 5, 2005
I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was a good page turning thriller but I really don't see what all the fuss is about. The ideas within the book have been well documented in the past.

Anyway, its ready to restart its journey.......I just need an address to ship to.

Thanks for sharing kab.

Off on its travels again! I posted it to ukbrat in Canada today (8th April)- its going surface mail so it might take a bit of time!

I can't believe that I have a copy of the Da Vinci Code in my hot little hands. Have been trying to get this book to read for a while! I have a hundred pages of my current book to read (which I will zip through!) before reading this one!

Thanks for sending the book along to me!

What an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only can I understand why it reached the top of the New York Times Best Sellers List, but also received so much attention from the Vatican. I think that this is a book that should be read and evaluated by all.
In addition to providing a great suspense thriller, Brown leaves the reader with numerous ideas about religion to be pondered. In short, a suspense novel that makes you think.
Thanks for sharing this book with me!

ooooooh! Gobbled this book in one go. The action doesn't stop. No wonder they made a movie out of it.

Received in the mail today, so the famous Da Vinci Code is finally in my hand! Unfortunately, it's behind several other bookring books, but I'm reading as quickly as I can! More later...

Journal Entry 22 by wingglade1wing from McLeansville, North Carolina USA on Thursday, May 25, 2006
I found this to be "unputdownable"! I got up at 5:30 a.m. today to finish it... Like most of the other folks on this ring, I found it exciting and fast-paced, and I think Brown does a wonderful job of blending fact and fiction, so much so that I have an urge to go out and do some research on several subjects in this book. (I've already looked through a book of Da Vinci's paintings to have alongside Brown's descriptions of them.)

In one sense, I cannot understand all the controversy over this book, but on the other hand I am not knowledgeable enough to know what he has "played with" and what is accurate or at least "real legend."

I've always thought it would be nice if Jesus had been married. In that we are supposed to model ourselves after him, it would be helpful if we had an example of him as a husband and father as well as a friend and teacher. I don't have a problem with the idea, and I'm not sure how his having a family would negate his divinity, as some churches apparently believe.

Nevertheless, this book is a NOVEL and explicitly says on the copyright page that it is fictional, so why get all worked up over it?

An acquaintance of mine said this was the first novel she had read that made her go to the Internet and do research. That can't be all bad...

Thank you, kab113, for sharing this wonderful story. Please PM me with your mailing address so I can send it home.

(As an aside, if you enjoyed this book and have not read The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova, you might want to give it a try. It is not as fast paced but it delves into legend and myth--relating to vampires--and also has scholarly heroes. I thought it was wonderful.)

I have not been able to reach kab113 yet, so will hold on to this book until I receive instructions from her. If it's an inordinately long time, I might try to continue the ring or just release the book...I'll keep trying to reach her, but meanwhile the book is in safe hands :)
