Book Description
Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in tum-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit.

Just received this in the mail, and it's going on my To Be Read list...

So, I *finally* got around to this book. Absolutely loved it. First of all, I never knew what the heck "Like Water for Chocolate" even meant. (For those of you as clueless as me: they are talking about hot chocolate to drink, not a chocolate bar. The best way to make it is to melt pieces of chocolate in milk or water. The water needs to be as hot as possible without boiling, and the protagonist is definitely 'like water for chocolate')

To anyone who likes this book, I definitely have to recommend "The Kitchen God's Wife". While I only have heard it on audiobook, it was well worth it.

Maybe I just haven't read enough Mexican literature, but it still takes me a second to adjust to a book with a historical feel that has unexplained magic thrown in without the slightest explanation. I mean, you expect that in a fantasy novel, but this kind of threw me.

Tita, the main character of this book, has the amazing power to communicate her feelings through food. Not just the fact that she cooked it shows she loves her family, but anyone eating her food feels the emotions she had when cooking it. Since Tita is forced to cook the wedding cake for her sister (who is marrying Tita's sweetheart), this can lead to some...interesting outcomes.

Well, I won't go on too much longer with the spoilers. This book has been offered as an RABCK to another BookCrosser, and I am waiting to hear back.
