cover:
Introducing Marlo Shaw, professional cricketer.
"Uncertain death, Marlo. Unexplained death. We need to find out how Jenny died."
Marlo can't believe her aunt Jenny would commit suicide. Too many things don't add up. But there is no evidence of forced entry, no smashed windows, footprints in the flowerbeds or signs of a struggle. Marlo is completely stumped.
Trying to avoid a passionate but complicated love affair, Marlo throws herself into the investigation. Did Jenny have something to hide, or was she the victim of a random crime? Caught in a web of complex family ties and mysterious disappearances, Marlo is determined to find out if her aunt's death was suicide, or murder ...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a story about family. How complex are the relationships & the ties that bind. How each individual can be so similar to the others, and so different at the same time. How each person remembers family history differently, and how treachery within can be so brutal.
A little slow to start, but it picked up once I started to understand the family relationships & when Marlo accepted her chosen role as investigator. Trying to look dispassionately at what she knew was particularly hard for Marlo - it's hard to be objective with family -, but once she started there was no going back, whether her family wanted her to continue or not. Marlo seems to be the observer of the family, the one who stepped back & watched, giving her insight into her cousins' lives.
I read A Simple Death, the next book, before this. While it is unnecessary to read them in order, I now feel I have a better grasp of Marlo's personality which would have helped me in reading of the 2nd.
I enjoy Morwood's writing. I just wish I could get my hands on the Eleanor Jones mysteries, written a decade later than the Marlo Shaws.
