Picked up at Book Festival catch up. One of those books that's always on 'Books you should have read' lists so will give it a go (despite the grumpy faces on the cover!)

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons - Good

Read as part of the 2016 Classics challenge

https://theprettybooks.wordpress.com/2015/12/27/2016-classics-challenge/

WHEN I Discovered This Classic
Fairly recently, picked the book up at a Bookcrossing Meetup on 28th February, recognised it as being on various 'great books' lists and decided to read it straight away.

WHY I Chose to Read It
Pretty much covered above. Serendipity put it in my path and that was that

WHAT Makes It A Classic
I'm not really sure. It was first published in 1932 and I guess no one had seen anything like it before. To be honest, I've never come across anything else quite like it, so I suspect it may be unique.

WHAT I Thought of This Classic
A very strange little story. Flora Poste orphaned in 'her twentieth year' is left an annual income of £100 but nowhere to live. She writes to various relatives who all invite her to stay, but Cold Comfort Farm catches her imagination and off she sets to darkest Sussex to stay with the mysterious Starkadders. Flora is a singular young lady of definite ideas and she immediately sets to work to 'sort out' the various members of her new found family. She is what might be less kindly referred to as a busy body.

Very wryly written and almost comic. I can see why it's still so popular, but while I enjoyed reading it, it wasn't really 'my style'.

WILL It Stay A Classic
Definitely, just because it is so comically written and 'of its time' I can see it will remain widely read.

It is also listed in the BBC's Bigread top 100
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

in the 1001 books you must read before you die http://www.listology.com/list/1001-books-you-must-read-you-die

in The Guardian's 1000 best novels

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jan/23/bestbooks-fiction

and in the BBC Meme: How Many of These 100 Books Have YOU Read?
http://www.librarything.com/topic/61828

WHO I’d Recommend It To
I will be passing it on to my Bookcrossing friends that are also trying to read the 1001 books. I'm sure at least one of them will be interested.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Posted out to Quadrat - hope you enjoy the book.

Happy travels little book.

Received today - thank you! Will get reading asap and get it moving on

This probably doesn't deserve such a low rating but I'm giving up on this book a third of the way through and will have to live with not reading some of the 1001 books i must read before i die!

It started off really nicely. I liked Flora and thought her teenage idealism (?) or naivety was charming, liked the way she wrote letters then analysed them.

I think what i really don't like is how some of the writing seems so internal - about thought processes or conversations that aren't as sharp as say Pride and Prejudice, Jeeves and Wooster, other type of things I associate with this era. Some of the sections just feel tiring to read and i started to zone out.

The book definitely has charm, but I'm just going to say it's probably not my sort of book and I am so used to modern or current writing.

Sending it on today.

What a cool BCID :-)

the book has arrived in grey and wet Bavaria.. can do with a little comfort!
But - as usual - after a period without a BC book there are now TWO rings here..
I will do my best!

Journal Entry 14 by kiki66 at Gauting, Bayern Germany on Monday, November 21, 2016
I think I have had the book long enough - and sadly I must admit defeat ..
I really gave it a try but just could't get into it. What 'quadrat' has written in her JE reflects exactly my opinion!
And I must also admit that, as a non-native speaker - I found it sometimes hard to read the dialect/slang...

So I will send on this book as soon as I have the next address...

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

When I started reading this, I thought it was very "politically incorrect": a well educated city girl goes to live with distant relatives in the country side, straightens up everything and solves every one's problems, then goes back to the city. Upon research, the book is a parody of such novels written in the late 19th century, and there are many jokes and references to characters, situations, authors etc. found in those other novels. Other than D. H. Lawrence, I haven't read any of the mentioned literature, so this was completely lost on me. But knowing the book is a parody made it easier to swallow the obvious exaggerations. The novel still remains very dated, in a cute kind of way. Why it is on the 1001 book list is a mystery to me, but it was a quick read once I got into it, so why not... Thanks Cassandra 2020 for sharing it.
It will be mailed today to DianeO.

Journal Entry 20 by DianeO at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Monday, June 19, 2017
Received today - thank you vaga-bonde (and for your nice note). Just one to read ahead of this.

Oh dear, supposed to be very funny but I found it fairly tedious. Surprisingly conventional attitudes and dated rather than timeless writing but, nevertheless an interesting window on the world of the 1930's for nice middle-class people.

I appear to be the last person on this bookray - shall I wild release it?
