I really enjoyed Tracy Chevalier's "Girl with the Pearl Earring", so I had high hopes for this book, but I was disappointed. The fact that it is written from the point of few of all the main characters in the book (one at a time for each chapter) made it hard to really sympathise with one or more characters.
The historic setting was interesting, but not very engaging. Also the whole suffragette movement storyline I thought was a artificial as compared to the rest of the story.
I hope someone else will enjoy it more.

I really enjoyed reading this book. In the beginning it may look boring, but apparently a woman's life at that time was quite boring and dictated by norms and rules. After the death of Queen Victoria things start to change ...
I quite liked all different perspectives on the same events; it is always a surprise who turns up to be the next "speaker". And I am still amazed by how different our life is now, in comparison to just one hundred years ago - when the telephone, motor cars and electricity were the latest technological developments and women were supposed to obey their husbands.
