I read this for a book group and am glad that I had that purpose as in the opening chapters I found the characters so irritating that I would have given up under normal circumstances. As it progressed, their stories were revealed, and out of the many possible crises I was not expecting the final revelation! So by the final section I was really enjoying it.

It's the baking hot summer of '76 and everyone is affected by the heat. The dependable Robert Riordan walks out of the house and doesn't come back, throwing his family into turmoil. His three grown up children return to help their mother but they all have problems of their own - Michael Francis's marriage is strained, Monica is effacing herself in her life with an antique dealer and Aoife, in New York, is hiding her problems in a blue file. This is a great family story, with everyday family dramas well-described and the issues of being an Irish immigrant in London in the 70s and of course Catholicism providing the backdrop to their problems. A very enjoyable read.
