Journal Entry 1 by alanfoxboro from Searcy, Arkansas USA on Thursday, February 12, 2004
Watership Down was one of my favorite books as a child. I recently re-read it and found it to be just as outstanding as I remember. Originally published in England in 1972, Watership Down later became a worldwide best seller when published in America. Who would have thought a book about rabbits could be so complex and thought provoking? If you haven't read this excellent book, you are missing out on what I consider to be one of the greatest literary works of the last 50 years.

I got an extra copy today and plan to send it out as a bookray if anyone is interested. PM me to get your name on the list.

Thank you for proposing this 'ring.

Lovely book, third time I've read it :) Mailing it to Georg-und-Co now, sorry about the delay folks.

Journal Entry 9 by Georg-und-Co from Griesheim, Hessen Germany on Sunday, December 12, 2004
Oh, I forgot to journal the incoming book. It's here for several weeks now and I read it the last month on my daily ride on the streetcar on the way to my place of work.

I hadn't seen the movie yet, but the book is a story of a big adventure mixed with an own mythologic background of the rabbits with wonderful stories. Specially the last half with the expedition to Efrafra was packed with suspence.

As soon as I get the adress from vampgirl the book will go to Spain.
Thank your for this wonderful book.

What a wonderful book! You can get quite immersed in it - forgetting that you are NOT a rabbit... Thanks for sharing it.

Will get a German copy for a friend who actually owns a pet rabbit. I just hope that the German translation is up to it.

Is travelling to hank when I've got his address.

1.3. Will be hopping on tomorrow.

Journal Entry 15 by winghank-chinaskiwing from Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Tuesday, May 3, 2005
Done at last! With nearly 500 pages in English it rather messed up my reading schedule, but I must say it was well worth the effort. Wonderful book! The adventures of Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, and their friends are nothing short of the adventure of life itself. Life, of course, not in the sense of mere physical existence or biological survival, but living up to what you were meant to be. It is a very religious, spiritual book, and the first chapters strongly remind of the story of Moses leading the Children of Israel out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. It's about doing what you've come to believe to be the right thing, no matter if all face evidence is against it; about following the advice of someone you trust in, whatever your own doubts or majority opinion are. And all the same, it's as unobtrusive and undogmatic as it can be, a thrilling, entertaining read. Big deal!

Off to Mirka by snailmail, enjoy!

Journal Entry 16 by Mirka from Enkirch, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Saturday, May 7, 2005
I received the book yesterday and will read it as soon as possible. Thanks to alanfoxboro for the bookray and to Hank-Chinaski for sending it to me :-)

August 12, 2005
The book feels very fine here with me, but I need some more time to read. I hope it's okay...

Journal Entry 17 by Mirka from Enkirch, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Tuesday, September 13, 2005
I really loved it!!

I agree with Hank, it's a very spiritual book. I don't have words to say what I really felt and thought when reading this book ... but now I just try to make everyone I care for to read it because I think everybody can learn a lot from Hazel, Fiver and all the others... :-)

After finishing the book I re-watched the movie ... and now I know why I never were able to understand it ... there is so much left out and some of the scenes are in another order as in the book ... it's no wonder!!
The drawings and the animation of the movie are very good, but you would have to make a series of at least ten parts to tell the whole book...

I'll send it on as soon as I get the address of Conejita.

17. Sept. 05
Conejita didn't answer yet, so I sent a PM to Feli-Hexe to ask for her address.

22. Sept. 05
Sent a 2nd PM to Feli-Hexe and one to Lilo37fee. I have to get rid of this book because my offline life actually needs more attention.

23. Sept. 05
Sent on to Lilo37fee - have fun! :-)

Journal Entry 18 by wingLilo37feewing from -- Irgendwo in Bayern, Bayern Germany on Saturday, October 1, 2005
Thank you for sending this book around. I read it in German already several times, and enjoy reading it in the original language now. How very very beautiful the Characters are described. It is no coincidence that my daughter´s rabbit is called "Hazel".
I can never see a rabbit without thinking something like "This is Fiver doing Silflay" or something like that. A great great read. I love the Stories of El - Arairah, and the end- I could read it again and again.

Journal Entry 19 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 12, 2005
This book is next on my Mount TBR. It looks like I'm last on the list for this one. Does alanfoxboro want me to keep the ray going or shall I do what I wish with the book?

Journal Entry 20 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 23, 2005
I stayed up late last night to finish this book and it was worth it! It took me a while to get into it and found it had a rather slow begining. However, the rabbit society kept throwing up lots of sociological and anthropology questions for me. What was the difference between the stories they use to explain Firth and El-ahariah and our stories of Jesus and God?

I really liked the idea of the rabbits having their own lanuage as well. Keehar's dialect is rather funny and took a few reads to get the message through. God knows how the rabbits felt.

The climax of the book is the siege at Watership Down by General Woundwort. My heart was in my mouth as it switched between Hazel's mission and the tunnelers digging their way through to the rest of the rabbits.

This is off to blaisezabini12 when I get an address.

Journal Entry 21 by Drusillamac from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 30, 2005
Sent to blaisezabini12 in the post today. The book is begining to look a bit battered (no doubt from its numerous trips!) so I have made some minor repairs using sticky tape.

Journal Entry 22 by rem_DUV-129661 on Saturday, December 10, 2005
Picked up today from the post office. Thank you Drusillamac for mailing the book and thank you alanfoxboro for adding me to this ray!

21 January 06: finally started reading this book! Will post more comments after I read it all:)

23 January 06: I am halfway through the book. I think that the author managed to make the book more convincing whenever the rabbits are facing new situations because they really act in strange ways. When faced with something they haven't met before they don't act like it's something ordinary and sometimes they don't even guess what it's all about - and I love these parts, when they discover more and more about the world surrounding them.
Oh, I also look forward to more chapters based on story-telling :)

24 January 06: finished the book yesterday evening. And I might add: what a great ending - the situation was really complicated in the last chapters and although I was hoping that everything will turn out allright I couldn't have guessed the way in which the author will solve the conflict.
I already have the address of the next reader.

30 January 06: finally mailed today! Sorry for keeping this ray stucked for so many weeks!
