The Man Who Fell to Earth is the story of T.J. Newton, an extraterrestrial being who travels to Earth in search of resources to save his dying race. Newton uses the American economy to become a multi-millionaire by patenting advanced electronics, but soon succombs to alcoholism and apathy. This is a touching novel about the blessings and curses of American free enterprise.

This book inspired the Nicolas Roeg film starring David Bowie.

Journal Entry 4 by maddymonkey from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Thursday, March 11, 2004
At university, my best friend made me watch the movie version. I don't really remember it (nor do I remember liking it) but I was possibly too inebriated. I thought I'd give the book a try now that I'm more often sober.

Thanks for offering it. Going out of town for the weekend, then I'll get started on it.

Journal Entry 5 by maddymonkey from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Monday, April 5, 2004
Loved Tevis' writing style -- effortless. This has got to be one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read, as much as it is sci-fi. Thanks for sharing.

PokPok took a pass, so it's off to newk in Oz today.

Journal Entry 6 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Wednesday, April 28, 2004
I found this today in the vast pile that awaited me on return from a trip. I am looking forward to reading it, having wanted to see the film..for some reason I never made it.
Please let me have a month. I shall pass it on if I cannot finish it by then.
Thanks to alanfoxboro and maddymonkey

Journal Entry 8 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, May 4, 2004
I liked this book and I am surprised I have not come across it before.
It is intelligent without trying to be too clever, and as well as being a great story about a representative of an alien race coming to Earth, it is an interesting social commentary on the world, especially the USA, in the 1960s.
Slightly dated now, but an excellent easy read. Would like to see the film one day.
Will be posted off in the next day or so. (it's gone)
Good an all who have been before.

Journal Entry 9 by TWIGMAN from Molalla, Oregon USA on Saturday, June 5, 2004
Got this book in the mail from Australia. Read it within 24 hrs!! It's ready to go to another reader.

It's a very good read, a real thinker. Similar in feel to "A Canticle For Leibowitz", or "Alas Babylon".

Release planned for Monday, June 07, 2004 at Gave to friend in Molalla, Oregon USA.

Off in mail to NY. This book is getting a traveling buddy, my spare copy of "A Canticle for Leibowitz". If you like this book then you'll like his friend.

Just got the book in the mail yesterday - looking forward to reading it and passing it on!

Journal Entry 12 by Puggles from Waterloo, New York USA on Tuesday, July 6, 2004
This book was part of a book ray. I signed up for it under my ID for my book crossing zone that is no more - the business closed. I enjoyed the book very much and would love to see the movie to see how they compare.

Journal Entry 13 by tyvmdear from Thompson, Manitoba Canada on Wednesday, July 28, 2004
Was waiting for me when I got home from work today.
Will start tonight.
Thank you for sharing this book with me and I will journal again when finished.

Journal Entry 14 by tyvmdear from Thompson, Manitoba Canada on Monday, August 2, 2004
Just finished reading this book.
What an intriguing story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do believe it is one of the best science fiction novels that I have read.

Thomas is a wonderful character and by the end of the book, you really feel for what he has been through.
As stated by Puggles, I also what to see the movie (again) to compare it to the book.
But as my luck would have it, the 2 video rental stores here DON'T have this movie. I will just have to scope out a friend or two and see if any of them have a copy and borrow it.

Thank you so much for including me in this bookray.
I will put it in the mail (to rivet) tomorrow as I have the address already.

Journal Entry 15 by tyvmdear from Thompson, Manitoba Canada on Tuesday, August 3, 2004
Mailed to rivet this morning.

This book came in the mail while I was away from home. I'm anxious to get started reading it, but I do have one other bookray-book ahead of it. I will get to it ASAP. (It shouldn't take me much more than a few days.) I'll post again when I'm finished reading it.

Thanks, everyone!

Journal Entry 17 by rivet on Sunday, September 5, 2004
I'm afraid I won't get to read this one. We're just starting to move, and I wouldn't want the book to get lost in all of the confusion. So...I'm sending it along to the next participant.

Hopefully, I'll get the chance to take this one out at the library.

Thanks for making this title available, alanfoxboro!

It's on its way to Ellegantly!

I am in temporary custody of this book... I will pass it to PokPok on our next meetup! (I have a few things for her!)

Journal Entry 21 by PokPok from Vista, California USA on Saturday, May 14, 2005
I rec'd this today from busybooklvr. I've got a few bookrings in front of it, but I will read and pass on asap. I first found out about this, as I am a huge Bowie fan (I'm listening to his excellent 2 CD collection in my car right now), but as a semi- sci fi fan, I wanted to check it out as well.

UPDATE: June 12th: I received 4 bookrings in 2 days, and have had little time to read, so I'm a bit behind. I will have this moved on asap. Thank you for your understanding.

RELEASE NOTES:

I'm sorry--for the second time now, I am too bogged down in rings to want to read this book. It just doesn't pique my interest enough, with 400+ on TBR. I originally wanted to read it b/c I'm a Bowie fan--but in that case, I should watch the movie. Mailing on to labmomnm tomorrow.

Journal Entry 23 by winglabmomnmwing from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, July 29, 2005
Wow - David Bowie was sitting in my mailbox yesterday! Imagine my surprise :-)

I've been hit hard by bookrings in the last week....how is it that I can go weeks with none, then 4 show up within a few days of each other?! Anyway - I'll get this back on its trip as soon as possible; definitely under a month.

10 August '05 - I started reading this yesterday evening, and I have to admit a major synaptic lapse on my part. I was happily reading along, and kept thinking, "Wow, they really changed this when they made the movie - I don't remember it being at all like this story". So, which idiot BookCrosser was thinking of the wrong movie?! I had "The Hunger" in mind; I realized this when he met Betty Jo....no way either Susan Sarandon or Catherine Deneuve would be hired to play her! D'oh!

That said, this is wonderful, so far - I'll have to add the film to my Netflix queue.

14 August '05 - This was great; thanks so much for sharing! I don't have much to add to what everyone else has already said, except for one thing that struck me as being really unintentionally funny...Bryce is eating at a diner (I think) and mentions that the place had "real" coffee, although it was expensive at 35 cents a cup....oh, how far from reality that was!

20 August '05 - mailed to niccijl (air)

Journal Entry 24 by niccijl from Bradford, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Friday, August 26, 2005
Received today from labmomnm as part of bookring. Will read as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 25 by niccijl from Bradford, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, September 17, 2005
I haven't seen the film of this novel, but am quite tempted to now just to see how they've worked it. An interesting, relatively easy read. An interesting take on the corruption of humanity, and I especially liked the ending.

Sent to platypussj on 24/09/05 to continue ray.

Thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 26 by platypussj from Colchester, Essex United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 27, 2005
Received yesterday and it's next on my list. Looks very interesting; can't wait to get my teeth into it!

UPDATE: Loved this book; that Tevis managed to tell this story in less than 200 hundred pages, and so simply too. Newton is a credible central figure and the message is all too apparent. This and Farenheit 451 should be required reading for anyone in government!

This book arrived safe ans sound yesterday from England. I just started another bookring book yesterday so this one will be at the top of my TBR pile. Thanks alanfoxboro for sharing, this book has been on the road for quite a while!

Journal Entry 29 by efs300 from -- By post or by hand --, South Carolina USA on Monday, November 14, 2005
I finsihed this book over the weekend. A very quick and easy read. A somewhat dated sci-fi story but very well written. I have never seen the movie but in looking it up I saw that someone is planning on making a new version. There is an entry on imdb.com with a 2007 date. Thanks to alanfoxboro for sharing this book, I enjoyed reading it.

Mailed today to Cocobarks......

Journal Entry 30 by Cocobarks on Wednesday, November 23, 2005
Received safely via the mail.
Thanks. I'm looking forward to reading this. I watched the movie a bunch of times on TV when I was a kid.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Journal Entry 31 by Cocobarks on Friday, December 30, 2005
A great book. Of course I saw the movie a few times when I was a kid, so I couldn't help but picture David Bowie at Tommy.

Thanks for the flash from the past.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Journal Entry 33 by nicolesinger from Newport, North Carolina USA on Wednesday, January 4, 2006
The book was waiting in my mailbox this afternoon when I got home. Thanks, Cocobarks - and alanfoxboro. It looks like a quick read, so I'll pm sqdancer for an address and try to turn it around as quickly as possible.

The book is in good shape for having been passed around so much, but the front and back covers are trying to separate from the spine - I'll apply some packing tape to remedy the situation.

Journal Entry 34 by nicolesinger from Newport, North Carolina USA on Tuesday, January 10, 2006
Wow. This was a quick read, and very good. The writing must have been very good because I can't remember a point at which it called attention to itself.

I was so intrigued by the Antheans and by Newton, and so frustrated by the end. No, no, no! I wanted to jump into the book and rescue him. I was so mad at the U.S. government, and infuriated by their actions - which I found entirely too plausible. I was really pulling for a different resolution.

I'm curious to see the movie now!

Journal Entry 35 by sqdancer on Thursday, January 26, 2006
Arrived safe and sound. I'm looking forward to reading it. Thanks for sharing.

I can't really add much to what has already been said, except to say that I enjoyed it also! Thank you so much for sharing.

Journal Entry 37 by TheBowieFollies from Brooklyn, New York USA on Monday, March 6, 2006
This came today. I am chuffed about it, I have seen Bowie live over 40 times, have watched the film version of MWFTE over 20 times, met the man, have spoken with him, have stolen a kiss from him, and my cheek was never the same! I have been meaning to read the Tevis book for aeons, and now finally it is here, to give you an example of how passionate I am about this, my screen name was girlwhofell2erth, my abyssinian's name is Ziggy. I am officially Alassinsane...
Can not wait to immerse myself in this and will be back to deconstruct and how ironic, my bessy mate hanggliding is next in line, nice one! cheers for sending this to me from canada sqdancer
cheers alanfoxboro for letting me be a part of this :)

Journal Entry 38 by TheBowieFollies from Brooklyn, New York USA on Sunday, March 12, 2006
As to be expected, I was completely entranced. This was infintely better than the film which I cherish! It was particularly fascinating because this was written in the zeitgeist of imminenent cold war fears and quite possibly Tevis may have felt it would be the end of the world as we know it..It was a little bit welly well orwell a little bit burgess and a whole lot of magic. I confess It left me weeping in the end. Cheers alanfoxboro for including me and see this book has been quite the prodigal son, I am posting this off during the week to my bestest droog in the south!
