The Man Who Fell to Earth
20 journalers for this copy...
The Man Who Fell to Earth is the story of T.J. Newton, an extraterrestrial being who travels to Earth in search of resources to save his dying race. Newton uses the American economy to become a multi-millionaire by patenting advanced electronics, but soon succombs to alcoholism and apathy. This is a touching novel about the blessings and curses of American free enterprise.

I mailed this book out today to maddymonkey in Chicago to start the bookray. I hope you all enjoy it.
At university, my best friend made me watch the movie version. I don't really remember it (nor do I remember liking it) but I was possibly too inebriated. I thought I'd give the book a try now that I'm more often sober.
Thanks for offering it. Going out of town for the weekend, then I'll get started on it.

Loved Tevis' writing style -- effortless. This has got to be one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read, as much as it is sci-fi. Thanks for sharing.
PokPok took a pass, so it's off to newk in Oz today.

I found this today in the vast pile that awaited me on return from a trip. I am looking forward to reading it, having wanted to see the film..for some reason I never made it.
Please let me have a month. I shall pass it on if I cannot finish it by then.
Thanks to alanfoxboro and maddymonkey

update. Things going well and I started today and it has a good feel. I shall PM twigman tonight to get his address.
I liked this book and I am surprised I have not come across it before.
It is intelligent without trying to be too clever, and as well as being a great story about a representative of an alien race coming to Earth, it is an interesting social commentary on the world, especially the USA, in the 1960s.
Slightly dated now, but an excellent easy read. Would like to see the film one day.
Will be posted off in the next day or so. (it's gone)
Good an all who have been before.

Got this book in the mail from Australia. Read it within 24 hrs!! It's ready to go to another reader.
It's a very good read, a real thinker. Similar in feel to "A Canticle For Leibowitz", or "Alas Babylon".

Just got the book in the mail yesterday - looking forward to reading it and passing it on!
This book was part of a book ray. I signed up for it under my ID for my book crossing zone that is no more - the business closed. I enjoyed the book very much and would love to see the movie to see how they compare.
Was waiting for me when I got home from work today.
Will start tonight.
Thank you for sharing this book with me and I will journal again when finished.

Just finished reading this book.
What an intriguing story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do believe it is one of the best science fiction novels that I have read.
Thomas is a wonderful character and by the end of the book, you really feel for what he has been through.
As stated by Puggles, I also what to see the movie (again) to compare it to the book.
But as my luck would have it, the 2 video rental stores here DON'T have this movie. I will just have to scope out a friend or two and see if any of them have a copy and borrow it.
Thank you so much for including me in this bookray.
I will put it in the mail (to rivet) tomorrow as I have the address already.

This book came in the mail while I was away from home. I'm anxious to get started reading it, but I do have one other bookray-book ahead of it. I will get to it ASAP. (It shouldn't take me much more than a few days.) I'll post again when I'm finished reading it.
Thanks, everyone!
Thanks, everyone!
I'm afraid I won't get to read this one. We're just starting to move, and I wouldn't want the book to get lost in all of the confusion. So...I'm sending it along to the next participant.
Hopefully, I'll get the chance to take this one out at the library.
Thanks for making this title available, alanfoxboro!
It's on its way to Ellegantly!

was mailed through a bookring/ray. this is great I love this site!
Interesting concept but a little hard to read and stay in to. Hopefully on it's way to the next BXer
I rec'd this today from busybooklvr. I've got a few bookrings in front of it, but I will read and pass on asap. I first found out about this, as I am a huge Bowie fan (I'm listening to his excellent 2 CD collection in my car right now), but as a semi- sci fi fan, I wanted to check it out as well.
UPDATE: June 12th: I received 4 bookrings in 2 days, and have had little time to read, so I'm a bit behind. I will have this moved on asap. Thank you for your understanding.

RELEASE NOTES:
I'm sorry--for the second time now, I am too bogged down in rings to want to read this book. It just doesn't pique my interest enough, with 400+ on TBR. I originally wanted to read it b/c I'm a Bowie fan--but in that case, I should watch the movie. Mailing on to labmomnm tomorrow.

Wow - David Bowie was sitting in my mailbox yesterday! Imagine my surprise :-)
I've been hit hard by bookrings in the last week....how is it that I can go weeks with none, then 4 show up within a few days of each other?! Anyway - I'll get this back on its trip as soon as possible; definitely under a month.
10 August '05 - I started reading this yesterday evening, and I have to admit a major synaptic lapse on my part. I was happily reading along, and kept thinking, "Wow, they really changed this when they made the movie - I don't remember it being at all like this story". So, which idiot BookCrosser was thinking of the wrong movie?! I had "The Hunger" in mind; I realized this when he met Betty Jo....no way either Susan Sarandon or Catherine Deneuve would be hired to play her! D'oh!
That said, this is wonderful, so far - I'll have to add the film to my Netflix queue.
14 August '05 - This was great; thanks so much for sharing! I don't have much to add to what everyone else has already said, except for one thing that struck me as being really unintentionally funny...Bryce is eating at a diner (I think) and mentions that the place had "real" coffee, although it was expensive at 35 cents a cup....oh, how far from reality that was!
20 August '05 - mailed to niccijl (air)

I haven't seen the film of this novel, but am quite tempted to now just to see how they've worked it. An interesting, relatively easy read. An interesting take on the corruption of humanity, and I especially liked the ending.
Sent to platypussj on 24/09/05 to continue ray.
Thanks for sharing.

Received yesterday and it's next on my list. Looks very interesting; can't wait to get my teeth into it!
UPDATE: Loved this book; that Tevis managed to tell this story in less than 200 hundred pages, and so simply too. Newton is a credible central figure and the message is all too apparent. This and Farenheit 451 should be required reading for anyone in government!

I finsihed this book over the weekend. A very quick and easy read. A somewhat dated sci-fi story but very well written. I have never seen the movie but in looking it up I saw that someone is planning on making a new version. There is an entry on imdb.com with a 2007 date. Thanks to alanfoxboro for sharing this book, I enjoyed reading it.
Mailed today to Cocobarks......

Thanks. I'm looking forward to reading this. I watched the movie a bunch of times on TV when I was a kid.

A great book. Of course I saw the movie a few times when I was a kid, so I couldn't help but picture David Bowie at Tommy.
Thanks for the flash from the past.

The book was waiting in my mailbox this afternoon when I got home. Thanks, Cocobarks - and alanfoxboro. It looks like a quick read, so I'll pm sqdancer for an address and try to turn it around as quickly as possible.
The book is in good shape for having been passed around so much, but the front and back covers are trying to separate from the spine - I'll apply some packing tape to remedy the situation.

Wow. This was a quick read, and very good. The writing must have been very good because I can't remember a point at which it called attention to itself.
I was so intrigued by the Antheans and by Newton, and so frustrated by the end. No, no, no! I wanted to jump into the book and rescue him. I was so mad at the U.S. government, and infuriated by their actions - which I found entirely too plausible. I was really pulling for a different resolution.
I'm curious to see the movie now!

This came today. I am chuffed about it, I have seen Bowie live over 40 times, have watched the film version of MWFTE over 20 times, met the man, have spoken with him, have stolen a kiss from him, and my cheek was never the same! I have been meaning to read the Tevis book for aeons, and now finally it is here, to give you an example of how passionate I am about this, my screen name was girlwhofell2erth, my abyssinian's name is Ziggy. I am officially Alassinsane...
Can not wait to immerse myself in this and will be back to deconstruct and how ironic, my bessy mate hanggliding is next in line, nice one! cheers for sending this to me from canada sqdancer

As to be expected, I was completely entranced. This was infintely better than the film which I cherish! It was particularly fascinating because this was written in the zeitgeist of imminenent cold war fears and quite possibly Tevis may have felt it would be the end of the world as we know it..It was a little bit welly well orwell a little bit burgess and a whole lot of magic. I confess It left me weeping in the end. Cheers alanfoxboro for including me and see this book has been quite the prodigal son, I am posting this off during the week to my bestest droog in the south!
This went out via media mail the 16th of March, this will be falling to Tennessee soon into the hands of my dearest droogie
