I didn't really enjoy this in the main due to the characters who were all pretty awful people, or very weak. I wanted to shake most of them. The exception is Imogen, the main character. I'll be interested to see what other readers think of this one.

I agree with you bookfrogster, in that most of the characters in this one were basically pretty unlikeable. Having said that, I've been plugging on to my book group for years that just because you don't like or can't identify with one or more characters doesn't necessarily make for a 'bad' book. Imogen is an interesting creation, but does some stupid things in terms of her own safety, and always seems to somehow easily pick up on the vital evidence...

I've now read all four of the Imogen Quy series and this is probably the best of the four by a slim margin. But it is still nothing to write home about, with many unanswered questions. As with the others, the situations, actions and resolutions are all a bit far fetched and I still have a problem with the dialogue being not 100% natural or convincing.

Will be going off to catsalive once all the travelling companions have arrived.

Thanks for tagging me, crimson-tide.

blurb:
Hoping to attract a generous endowment, St Agatha's College, Cambridge, invites fabulously wealthy Sir Julius Farran to dine. The evening is a disaster for everyone but Imogen Quy, the college nurse: Farran invites her to come and work for him. She declines, but when Farran dies, suddenly and shockingly, she has to look into it. His death left a large hole in his company accounts that could mean financial ruin for St Agatha's.

To save her college, Imogen starts to cast her cool eye over the financier's heirs, employees and enemies. What is right about the death of Sir Julius? What is wrong about it? And why did it happen? After all, her name rhymes with ''why''.

I agree with you both. Mostly forgettable characters except Imogen, who is a very pleasant person, but does seem to be a bit of a doormat, even if a very clever one.

Well-written, but I don't think there's any clear way of following Imogen's deductions, except in retrospect, I suppose. It is all a bit unconvincing, as you say, c-t.

Quite an enjoyable read about a Cambridge University nurse who does some sleuthing on the side as well as attending to her paid tasks at the University. Well written good plot and a twist in the tail ending
