I was given this book by a friend and I would like to be able to say I enjoyed it, but I can't. I found it to be a surreal jumble of thoughts and stories.

I failed to find it amusing, interesting or worth the effort of reading it.

There was a time when I would have persevered, but I gave up. Whoever finds this, I hope they won't curse me for inflicting it on them.

The autobiography of my reading Graham Chapman's autobiography.

I came to this book at a late age - it has been in existence for 24 years! Most of that time had not been spent in the Guild Ford (neither by me or the book, though considerably more by me). Paradoxically the book was waiting for me in two places at the same time - the pub and the net.
I had seen it one one visit, thinking pink cover, pages falling out - not for me. Then I saw it again on the net, with a poor review. So the next day I picked it up. But was it going to be worth it?
I have been so glad that I did. Reading the book in the same state that Dr G. Chapman appears to have lived most of his life must have made it intelligible to me.
Obviously while I was still sober, it was initially confusing, but as the alcohol kicked in and childhood finished I began to enjoy the book.
I was impressed by the author's posthumous timing, asking the question 'When will Roy Orbison die?' just as 'Pretty Woman' was trickling to an end over the RATHER TOO LOUD speaker system. [Although Rock Music Is My Life, I am quite disturbed at the frequency and volume it is played at lunchtime. Though it beats trad. Scots music]
Next I was unfortunately disillusioned as to the originality of Blackadder, when it became obvious that one of the funnier jokes on the series actually pre-dated the show, lifted from either Wilde, Whistler or Dr G. himself. I can't decide which, but definitely lifted.
Bat's piss if you are interested.
I soon returned to work.
Over the next few days I have been entertained by a thoroughly good read, and although it is difficult to establish the integrity of various statements, there must be a kernalof truth, and the anecdotes are amusing. Or poignant. It depends where you're coming from.
I have just finished the 'story', while at 'work', unable to access my 'PC'.

I heartily recommend it (and the illustrations), though it does appear that it is necessary to adhere to Leith's motto.

[Persevere!]

I may leave it the pub of that name as it would be a suitable link to the book's journey...
