I'm so glad I found this book: this way, I can finish the 9gag challenge without further torturing myself with Hamsun's Mysteries.

Also, I quite enjoyed The Kite Runner, so I've been actually looking for this book to further my acquaintance with Hosseini.

There was a point where I thought I was not going to like this book. The first few chapters were okay, but when it turned out that Jalil was nothing but weak and Rasheed pretty much one-dimensionally ugly and evil, I felt this was going to turn into a misery-memoir type of story. Fortunately, the female characters were interesting enough to keep me going, and after a while, some formulaic, but still unexpected twists and turns made the book unputdownable after all.
I think this is best read as a fairy tale: there clearly is a strong story-telling tradition behind this, and plenty of violence, co-incidence and a few moral lessons to make the story seem a little heavy-handed if treated solely at face-value.
This doesn't mean it's not a beautiful or even an important book; I think it is, and I enjoyed it very much (and I do feel more confident still after it to add my opinion to the discussion of the ongoing "refugee crisis" and "war on terror"). I certainly feel the world might be a better place if more people read this.
