Rabbi David Small is trying to bring his new, post-WW II congregation of Jews together. But the problem is that he's not quite what they expected. They wanted a strong, charismatic leader of the temple, who'd be a civic figure and help make their temple just like the other, Christian churces in town. But Rabbi Small is an absent-minded scholarly man, who believes that the Jewish tradition emphasises how Judaism is different from all other traditions.

In the middle of a popular uprising against the rabbi, a woman is murdered in the temple parking lot, and her purse is found in the Rabbi's car. Can David save his job, his community, and his own freedom before the anti-Semitism bubbling below the surface of the community erupts?

A fascinating read. Rabbi Small is a serious scholar, who's views are often at odd with those of his own community, but who sticks to his guns even when compromising would get him what he want.
