The style in which this is written reminded me of The Incident of the Dog in the Night. It is written as if by the mentally ill boy who has a traumatic loss in his childhood for which he feels responsible. The author has experience in this field which helps to make it more authentic.

I did however feel it was a bit formulaic somehow hence the 5.

I’ve had this for some time and have finally got round to reading it needing a quick read for a weekend away. And it did last me the weekend. I found it moving and sad. Still trying to work out if it is aimed at young adults as I initially thought, as some of the themes are quite difficult. I do see what caroline2 means by formulaic and note that it was written on a creative writing course.
