Jess is going into the fifth grade. He likes to draw, and he wants to be the fastest runner in the school. Leslie moves in next door. She is also in fifth grade. She is an only child, and very smart. The two become best friends, and find a secret place where they can go.
This book has drawings by Donna Diamond.
Written on about a fourth-grade reading level. This book won the Newbery Medal. It is also a book that people often try to ban. The reasons for trying to keep people from reading this book are: bad language; allegedly promotes the occult; supposed sexual content. I do not understand where the last complaint comes from.
