Here's one for you: a detective novel where the investigator is clinically paranoid.

Romulus Ledbetter (the Caveman) became convinced that the ultimate evil force was named Cornelius Gould Stuyvesant, and was using Y-Rays to control reality. He left his family and his promising musical career and moved into a cave in a public park, surviving on whatever he could.

But now someone's dumped a body outside his cave on the coldest night of the year. And the Caveman has decided to bring the murderer to justice, no matter how many Y-rays Stuyvesant might shoot at him.

A wonderfully strange book. Ledbetter is a unique POV character, and his investigation is unorthodox. The story unfolds logically, and apart from the wrap-up at the end where everything we didn't see is explained, the writing is at turns funny, taut, and thrilling. Everything from imaginary villains, real murders, the inner thoughts of dogs, and midnight chases through thorny woods being hunted by faceless killers who may or may not be real, this is a book to spend some time with.
