Journal Entry 1 by InvisibleAng from Belfast, Co. Antrim United Kingdom on Monday, March 16, 2015
Stephen is twelve and obsessed with a murder that shook his family a generation earlier: that of his uncle, who was then a child. But spending his Saturdays digging for the remains on the nearby moors doesn't change things, so Stephen, recently commended at school for his letter-writing skills, decides to contact the killer directly to ask for the location of his uncle's grave.

And after twenty years in prison, the serial killer Arnold Avery is quickened by the letter from the young boy...

I'm not a big crime reader but the premise drew me and I thought Bauer got the psychology of the characters exactly right: the withdrawn grandmother who still stands at the window all day waiting for her murdered child to come home, the struggling mum, the friendship between a confident, domineering boy and his quieter foil - the murderer, too, feels chillingly plausible.
