cover:
Gordon Comstock loathes dull, middle-class respectability and worship of money. He gives up a 'good job' in advertising to work part-time in a bookshop, giving him more time to write. But he slides instead into a self-induced poverty that destroys his creativity and his spirit. Through the character of Comstock, Orwell reveals his own disaffection with the society he himself once renounced.

What an extremely repellent person Gordon Comstock is. I can't understand why Rosemary would want to have anything to do with him, he's such a self-absorbed pig. For all his supposed desire to renounce a money-driven society, it's all he ever thought about - what other people were doing with their money, how they earned it & how they looked down on him for having none. He showed barely a trace of conscience regarding his sister's plight. A disgusting piece of humanity, who finally showed signs of growing up in the last couple of pages, & not a moment too soon: thirty is a bit old to be railing at the 'unfairness' of it all.

I can see Orwell's frustration at the difference between the ideal & the reality. He still sold his books to publishers for a fee, instead of giving away his ideas for free. Ideals have a way of being subsumed by the necessities of living. It comes to us all.

For all that, once I got into the book it was hard to put down as I waited for the next piece of Gordon's idiocy - and, perhaps, naivete.

Quite alright a book and easy enough to get through. Comstock is an insufferable, male and I don't know how any other characters could have tolerated him. It does feel like something is missing from this book. My first Owell novel but apparently one he wasn't too proud of.
