Biography about early years writer which shows how three Negro women from different generation struggle and flight for acceptance in a world dominated by ' whitefolks'. Guided and directed by her Momma, her brother and her mother, Maya overcomes difficulties and becomes a proud, selfrespecting woman. The book creates a realistic image of Afro-American life from the '30s till the ''70s and is full of beautiful comments and observations about how to deal with life's difficulties.
