Ben Elton’s 15th novel Time and Time Again has a shopworn and somewhat tedious time-slip plot. The protagonist's mission is to stop the First World War, the repercussions of which have left the world of 2024 a desolate, desperate place. To do so, Hugh, a former soldier and professional adventurer must join a secret Cambridge society called the Order of Chronos, travel back to 1914 and kill the Kaiser. Elton spends so long setting up both his rickety historical premise and the cod physics of time travel that he forgets to make Stanton’s dislocations emotionally meaningful, let alone thrilling.
I was entertained but not enthralled by this book. Not terribly well written, but I cannot resist the premises of time travel.
Chosen from the VBB: I hope you enjoy it.
