This was slow to start but about 3/4 into it, it picks up and makes you think more.

from back cover:
Set in South Carolina in 1964, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother" Rosaleen insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina-a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

This sat on my TBR bookshelf for well over a year, I am embarrassed to admit. And why it took so long to read this delightful book is beyond me.

Taking it to our monthly meeting tonight in hopes that someone else will take it home and read it in less time than it took me!

An excellent book. Zach's my favorite character, even if he's just a minor one.

Finally got to reading this. Such a nice book! I really enjoyed it, especially all those bee facts woven into the story! :-) It is both very sad and very magic, but also very cheery after all.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were believable and the story rattled along nicely. It feels like it's destined to be a 'modern classic' reminded me a bit of To Kill a Mockingbird, which is high praise!
