Just finished this - a quick read. I felt the sad circumstances of the family, who lived in a desperate situation.

Going to offer this up as a bookray.

I'm glad I signed up for this! It looks very interesting, and it looks like it won't take long to read at all.

Journal Entry 5 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Wednesday, May 5, 2004
I read this in two nights, and loved the descriptions of the mountains in winter, the long twisting roads, the harvesting scenes...

The book was like a Silhouette or Harlequin romance, and my favorite male character was Earl, NOT Sam! If only...

Received yesterday. Thanks very much! I am looking forward to reading it and will pass it along ASAP.

Journal Entry 7 by mlbish from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA on Wednesday, June 30, 2004
Whew! Finished last night. My deepest apologies for taking too long. Things got really backed up at my house. Please don't send the BC thugs after me!!

This was a pleasant enough story. I'm surprised it was published on its own, really, because it's not much more than a short story.

The characters were interesting and the story moved along. I did get tired of the typos and grammatical errors. I got the feeling this was sort of a 'hometown' publication, but there was actually a lot of blatant stuff that even spellchecker would have caught.

I was interested in this book because I grew up in Appalachia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On page 56, she mentions an area called the New River Valley, which is where I was born and raised. I am familiar with the Appalachian-style accent in that area, which I will admit is not really deep-Appalachian and not SO rural. I didn't feel that the author really got the dialect quite right. There were just a few things that I didn't think were true to life. Having said that, I will point out that most of the story took place in the North Carolina Blue Ridge, so it's possible the dialect is different, so I may be totally ignorant.

Thanks for sharing, MaryZee. I will get this out to Maria8487 today or tomorrow.

I just recieved it. I'm looking foward to reading it. In fact, I'm going to start on it tonight.

Journal Entry 10 by Maria8487 from Bellevue, Nebraska USA on Tuesday, July 13, 2004
Finished it today.

I thought it was a very well written story. I enjoyed it. One of the things that bugged me about was the fact that the characters would be talking in their accents, then they wouldn't, then they would again.

I loved how quickly you can read it, but still enjoy it. I would have liked more information about how the mom died, but we all can't have our ways.

Will send it out to HavFaith on Thursday. :)

Arrived today ~ Looks like it'll be a good read. =) It's pretty short so I should be able to get it sent on to Nekki2976 in a week or so.

Journal Entry 13 by havfaith from Spokane, Washington USA on Tuesday, July 20, 2004
Well, never mind the week or so... I finished this before heading to bed. It's a very quick read and moves along fast enough to keep the reader interested. I'm wondering if I missed something though. What happened to his wife and other kids? He just walked away from them? I have to agree that I wish Iona had gone with Earl instead of waiting on Sam to reappear. Amazing how fertile these people are too. Anyhoo, this will be moving along again as soon as I get Nekki2976's addy. =)

Thanks for sharing this book MaryZee! =) I look forward to reading The Snakeman Cometh. Hopefully that one will begin moving again soon. =)

Heading off to New York... =)

I finished this a couple of days ago, and I've been trying to figure out what to say. A lot my thoughts, I've found, have already been stated.

Although I enjoyed reading it, I'm afraid it left me wanting something more. It seemed like a Harlequin romance -- but I'm grateful for the quickness of the romantic encounters, as they didn't seem that romantic. The characters, I didn't think, were very developed. There seemed to be gaping holes in the timeline that could have been filled in better -- or else I'm just confused from the flipping from far past to present to somewhere in between. It seemed as though the editor stopped editing about halfway through the book: there were so many spelling and punctuation errors.

I enjoyed reading it, but unfortunately, I'd have to say I probably wouldn't buy it.

Thanks for the opportunity, MaryZee!

received this as part of a bookray started by MaryZee. looks like a fast read....
i'm in the middle of a book right now, but this is next on my tbr-list.

as i expected, this was a quick read. i started AND finished it last night. and yeah, since this is a novella, not a "proper" novel, it did move along rather quickly storywise. still the story did have substance and who says endings always have to be satisfying, anyway. after all, isn't this why we read rather than, say, watch TV - to imagine what could happen and what these people could actually look like. it is one of the reasons i read. :-)

since i am obviously the last on the list (technically, i am not even ON the list), i'll hang on to the book for a couple of weeks, in case someone should stumble across it on this here website. if no one does i might pass it on or wild release it or who knows....
