This is quite an intriguing read ... I have never read Moore's much-talked-about-and-once-nearly-banned "Stupid White Men", so I cannot compare this to his other works. I will limit my review to this particular title.

He seems to write in a straightforward fashion, as if he was directly addressing the reader, which is a welcome touch. With his no-nonsense breakdown of complex issues and diligent notation of most of his sources, he might just be able to slightly sway (if not completely persuade) even his staunchest critics. Of course, it would be very easy to throw yourself in with either the "Moore-ists" or the "Bush-ists". The reality is, I think, somewhere in between. However, I personally find that the official answers that we have heard for many of Moore's questions are sorely inadequate. These are questions that are on everyone's mind and beg for a proper explanation.

The chapters and ideas that interested me the most were:
1) Moore's look at the disparity between actions that caused Clinton's impeachment and those that should cause Bush's
2) The disturbing background of the Patriot Act
3) Moore's statistical look at Americans' actual beliefs

I do have a couple of complaints about the book ... Moore sometimes slips up and refers to 'certain sources' (or something to that effect) as the sole reference for some of his more powerful claims. At those times, he only seems to be furthering conspiracy theories. At other times, he accuses countries that were at one point conquered by Nazi Germany and, more recently, chose to join America's "coalition of the willing" of being Nazi collaborators. I think that there is a big difference between being a conquered nation and a collaborator/ally.

like 'Lies & the Lying Liars...' i think this is a book everyone needs to read. in fact, i found myself comparing it to Franken's book quite a bit.

having said that, i have to say the comparisons were not favorable, but i don't think that is the book's fault. basically, the message is similar, but Moore is nowhere near the writer, nor the comedian that Franken is. i kept agreeing with nearly everything he was saying, and being outraged in all the right places, but i also kept wishing i was enjoying it as much as i had enjoyed 'Lies.' but i also realize that i'm not really being fair: yes, Franken is the brainy funny guy, and that's more my style. but Moore is known for plain speaking the truth, which is why i think he resonates with and has reached so many people; there's a lot to be said for that. i know Franken can alienate as many people as he reaches with his style of humor.

i finally came to the conclusion that Moore is a better filmmaker than he is a writer, but his book still needs to be read.

sending off to BunRab.

One book ahead of this one on my pile; should start it around Thursday.

Whew, what an adventure- I lost the book and had to go buy a replacement! When I finally find the original again, I'll keep it- I liked the book enough to want to own it.

Moore is sometimes a little scatterbrained, and yes, let's admit it, liberals can occasionally get shrill and hysterical (although to my way of thinking, assorted religious fundamentalists are even more so) so it's not a perfect book.

Mailed to next person in ring, via media mail, so it may take up to 10 days to get there. Sorry but the budget's a bit tight, and not going first class is one of the ways to save money...

This just arrived, and I thought it looked crisp for a bookring book! Then, had to giggle at BunRab's note about losing the book! I live in fear of that! *grins*

I should get to this soon and have it moving again. thanks, everyone, for keeping this book going as the elections draw ever nearer.

Brilliant . . . I want everyone to read this book and then get MAD about the bullshit being shoveled. I especially enjoyed the chapter from God and the chapter about talking to your conservative brother in law (or brother, in my case). Very good advice!

On to kellyhp . . . thanks for sharing!

I received this in today's mail as part of a bookring. The USPS mangled it a bit so I attempted to tape the dust jacket back together. The book itself is in great shape still...don't worry. I am looking forward to this one, especially after all of the enlightening comments.

This was a great read! It really made me think about the state of our country, especially with the upcoming election. I think my favorite chapter was "Home of The Whopper". He uses the analogy of the Whopper to disect many aspects of Bush's political career and the many "whoppers" that have been told.

Received book yesterday.

During the first week of August I sent forwarded Dude... to:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/Krackergrl

I've read a lot of books spanning the full spectrum of the the political scene.

But the more I read the more confused I get, and the less I can believe. This applies not only to politics but to almost all areas of life.

I'm sorry everyone! I thought that I had journalled that I had received this book!

I just finished reading it and will pass it on as soon as I have the address.

I'm still thinking about this book - a lot. It pisses me off that the Bush's are manipulating us so much and making tons of money for themselves and their friends. While I didn't necessarily agree with his take on what God would say (I have my own strong opinions on abortion), I found the rest of the book to be very eye-opening while at the same time entertaining.
