Gripping account of how two men, Dr John Snow and Rev Henry Whitehead, used modern methods of research and evidence to help overturn dogma and show how the deadly cholera bacterium could be defeated. Also a lot of background about waste management in large cities, both historical and contemporary. Excellent read!

Currently reading it; I will ask for Icila's address.
I finished reading this book some time ago, but got caught in another bookray that must also go to Icila... and somehow I didn't journal this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed most of the book, and kept referring to the maps and diagrams enclosed. Very interesting, I have learnt things I didn't know, and hadn't even thought about.
Now the final chapters, dealing with current times and the future, were slightly boring; a real shame, as the historic part was so interesting.
Thanks, JuniperHill, for sharing this piece of London's history I had no knowledge about.
This book will soon be on its way to France.

Sent to Icila, in France, with another bookray.

I'm very sorry, time flied at a supersonic speed.
It was a very interesting story but a very long one. Bill Bryson resumed it in a chapter of his "At Home" that as a matter of fact I received and read very recently.
Like Bookworm-lady I didn't like the last chapter.

Aus-Charlotte asked to be taken off the list. The book is going to catsalive.
On its way to Australia. Enjoy !
This is with me. Thanks, Icila.

I've always been fascinated by that massive, revolutionary, evolutionary, Victorian marvel of engineering, the London sewerage system, & the work of the men that led to its construction. Such a simple thing for us to believe in today, but Snow & Whitehead really had their work cut out for them to get the establishment to listen to their theory. Interesting reading.
Thanks for sharing, JuniperHill. I'll get this off to Sparkish shortly.

Picked up from the post office today. Thank you very much for sending this on to me catsalive
Apologies for the delay in journaling this - I actually finished it over a month ago and it slipped my mind. I really enjoyed this and found it very interesting. I did agree with others that the last chapter seemed unecessary though. Thank you for this bookring Juniperhill if you can PM me your address I will return it to you.
