One jacket-reviewer summed up this story well when he said, "Anne Michaels's fiercely beautiful debut novel tells the interlocking stories of three men of different generations whose lives are transformed by the events and shifting effects of the same war." To me, reading it was an interesting experience. The impact that her poetry background has on her prose is remarkable, making this alone a reason for other writers to read her book. I've noted this impact before when reading the work of other writers, but never has it been so striking and powerful.
I'd have rated it higher, but its structure seemed somewhat confusing to me. I found it hard to pick up where I left off without a lot of backtracking. Aunt-Annie 01/24/2004
