Never Let Me Go is a dystopian novel that is set in 1990's England and revolves around a state sponsored and sanctioned programme of human cloning. The novel in particular, centres around a group of clones, euphemistically referred to as "students", who grow up in Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic school and institution set in the deep southern English countryside. Once the 'students' leave Hailsham they are given a year of two of relative freedom before they begin donating organs so as to prolong the lives of ordinary citizens. These “donors” will continue to donate organs until they “complete,” a euphemism for death, which usually comes after their third or fourth 'donations'.
The 'students' have less time on earth but their lives still involves hopes and joys, disappointments and sorrows similar to those on the outside. Yet despite Miss Emily and her cohorts' efforts to improve the 'students' up-bringing the clones are still looked upon with revulsion and distrust. The programme gets shut down when one Doctor attempts to make them even more human by allowing them the possibility of breeding. In fact Kathy displays a greater depth of humanity than what any of the humans do.
A thoroughly enjoyable read that deserves to be on the 1001 list.
