cover:
The year is 1936. In Spain General Franco has raised the standard of revolt against the Republican government; in Britain people in the know are beginning to whisper about the King's interest in a twice-divorced American woman; and at Hallam, seat of the famous Hallams, Sarah Causley arrives to take up an appointment as nursery governess. The Hallams are glamorous, public-spirited and generous, their work for peace and their literary talents have made them household names among the intelligentsia. It has also made them targets.

As the events of that fateful year take up their energies, a cruel campaign of practical jokes takes shape against them, apparently perpetrated by boys of their village, under the influence of a sinister Fascist major. Slowly their world of fine words and good deeds seems to be collapsing about them, mirroring the collapse on the wider world stage, until eventually the broad, sunny lawns of Hallam become the scene of an apparently senseless murder.

Not a bad read.
