The Family Upstairs
1 journaler for this copy...
In a time past, I used to read about 30 books a year. It now takes me about 3 years to read that many.
The Family Upstairs is only the second book I finished in 2021 and it is mid July! I do hope this book is the start of me being a more active reader again.
The pros of The Family Upstairs: Nice prose, good editing. Small, bite-sized chapters that can be read quickly. I finished it in under a week. Many people loved it, it got tons of great reviews and is a NY Times Best Seller. It also (hopefully) has ushered in a renewed era of reading for me.
Cons: I don't want to say too much negative, but I will say: best enjoyed if you don't think too deeply about the plot. If you just let all the actions of the events flow over you and leave it at face value, in a world without, say, tax burdens, its a fine mysterious family drama and sort-of-a-thriller. Based on how the children in this book acted, I also thought for a long the author must not have any children of her own. I looked up her bio just to see if my suspicions were correct, but it turns out she does have children. Huh, surprised since the kids in the book were kinda weird.
Personally, this was not to my taste but is not a bad book and a good screen play writer could fix it up into a nice limited series (SHOW US a very charismatic David instead of having us guess why with the little bit we are TOLD).
I know this book have many fans so I hope it finds its reader while I move onto a novel more to my taste. I plan to leave this at a pool because, as one of the glowing reviews in the front quotes from another author of similar genre, "...the perfect poolside read."
Happy Reading!
