From Amazon review:
After unwittingly destroying the magical wards that had sealed off the Old World from the New for 3000 years, the war wizard Richard Cypher discovers that he has inadvertently created a gate through which the evil Keeper, Emperor Jagang, and his minions can enter the land. Separated from his beloved, the former Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell, who is in hiding to avoid being executed by the people she once served, Richard must now accept the power of his father, Darken Rahl, and use all of his magical abilities to defeat Jagang, to save Kahlan and to close the gate. As in the two previous novels of The Sword of Truth fantasy cycle (Stone of Tears, etc.), Goodkind builds an intricate plot teeming with violence, treachery and intrigue. Newcomers to the series may find it a challenge to get up to speed, but once they do, they?as well as Goodkind's large, loyal readership?will delight in a complex epic fantasy that crackles with vigor and magical derring-do. CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Another book that sounds interesting, but I don't want to jump into a series halfway through.

This book enjoyed a brief stop in San Jose, CA before continuing its travels in the Science Fiction & Fantasy Bookbox.

I'm claiming this book from lane1088's SF/Fantasy bookbox. I've read one or two other titles from the "Sword of Truth" series, but hadn't read this one.

Later: I dunno. The book opens with half a dozen naked women suffering unspeakable torment in nightmares, only to turn out to be priestesses, deadly-dangerous in their own right, using their powers to castrate and disassemble a ship's crewman who seemed about to rape one of their number. Then they go on to demolish another man who was unable to obey the command to look only at their faces, even though he clearly wanted to obey... So I get the impression this is a very brutal world indeed.

By the time we get to the main characters, things don't look much better, and I found myself skimming through the story to see if anything was going to either catch my interest or tell me to give up at once. And nothing grabbed me, so I'm going to move this book along in hopes that it finds a more appreciative reader.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series.]
