This book, often described as Pearl S. Buck's epic, was an American bestseller in 1931 and 1932 and won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1938 for her amazing accomplishments in writing of China, where her parents, West Virginia Presbyterian missionaries, had settled. Buck was born in China in 1892 and lived there until she went to college at Randolph Macon. "I can only write what I know, and I know nothing but China, having always lived there," Buck said. I have always wanted to read THE GOOD EARTH and squirreled away this lovely little "Contemporary Classics" edition some time ago. This novel tells the story of the Chinese people, exemplified by the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-lan. I very much admired the 1937 movie made from the novel some years ago and eventually I will get around to reading this but for now it seems best to release this particular copy to give the next reader a chance. So this will go to another bookshelf or into the wild soon. This beautiful little mass market paperback was published in 1994. It features wonderful, historical pictures and is skillfully introduced and edited.
