I'm a big fan of Helen Dunmore's novels, so was delighted to find this one that I hadn't read in the charity shop in Milton, Weston-super-Mare last week.

Helen Dunmore has surpassed even her own high standards with this amazing story of love, war and consequences. I was totally engrossed from cover to cover, didn't want to put it down.
It's 1920 and Daniel Branwell is back in his native Cornwall, haunted by the horrors of the trenches and especially the nightmare death of his friend Frederick Dennis, who regularly appears to him at night.
Then there's the complication of Frederick's sister Felicia who's also mourning her brother and her husband Harry Fearne ....
Highly recommended! It's wonderful!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This was another goodie from Helen Dunmore. It took my attention from the beginning and I read it quite quickly, but it's not a fast moving plot that keeps you reading, it's not that kind of book. It's a pretty depressing study of PTSD and friendship and the horrors of war. It also has a gay subtext which never fully comes to the surface. The saddest part of it for me was the idea of our protagonist coming home from war without a home or a family or a friend to welcome him back.

Picked up at York meet, not entirely sure why as I rarely read war books! Probably cos I recognize the authors name.

P.S nu-knees thinking about a Leeds meet but my weekends have gone a little crazy so waiting until I actually know of a few clear dates to suggest! :)
