From the back cover:

"Do you ever lie awake at night, wondering whether the Snorkmaiden was having an affair with Moominpappa? Have you ever drunk a bit too much, and started an argument about Button Moon? Do you find yourself drifting off during boring business meetings, trying to remember the names of the Flumps? If so, this book is for you.

'The Encyclopaedia of Cult Children's TV' will take you back to a better age. It will take you on a journey back to Chigley, to Moominvalley, to Toytown, high above the streets and houses, where it was all so honest and simple. Where it was perfectly ordinary for a camp man in dungarees, a big woolly bear, a fey pink hippo and a bitchy zipped-up gimp to get in bed with each other and sing a song..."

Bought cheaply, especially for BookCrossing purposes.

[Be warned, however, that there appear to be no references to the first three things I thought to look up when I got home with it - namely 'No. 73', 'Metal Mickey' or 'Worzel Gummidge' !!! This was so disappointing that I couldn't bring myself to further engage with this book. I hope whoever reads it in the future finds what they are looking for though...]

Picked up at the monthly York Bookcrossing meetup.

This was disappointingly shite. It's got a studenty, snarky tone about it that gives the impression that the author neither likes kids shows, nor has much in the way of wit.

I mean "was the Snork Maiden having an affair with Moominpappa?". Lordy. There's a female character in a kids show, she must be banging the daddy character. He pulls the same schtick with the Smurfs. That sort of thing was sort of funny when I was a teenager, but then I grew up a bit. This guy didn't.

Bit of a mixed bag. As someone who didn't watch much TV growing up, flicking through this book was less a nostagia trip and more a case of "so THAT's what everyone keeps banging on about!" There are some genuinely informative entries, particularly on more obscure stuff. Better-known shows get treated with snarky humour, some of which has really not aged too well... Could have done with fewer redundant character bios, more of the author's research into the history of the various program makers. (I was previously unaware of Cosgrove Hall's palce in television history!) Still, I enjoyed it.

Since this has been kicking around for a while now, in order to free up some space on the Brigantes OBCZ Bookshelf, I thought I'd move it on to the Ye Olde Starre Inne OBCZ Bookshelf - where hopefully it'll find a new reader...

Will keep this on my desk at work for the occasional look in coming months although like previous owners I've already found one programme missing & disagreed with the tone a bit. Not necessarily as encyclopaedic as the title would lead you to believe. Doubtful that any updated version from the past 17 years is any better.
