From the back cover: What kind of mother would leave her four kids in a parked car in a strange town and then just walk away? Maybe a mother who had gone a little crazy. But the Tillerman kids - Dicey, James, Sammy and Maybeth - couldn't do anything to stop her. All they could do was watch as their mother blended into the Saturday morning mall crowd. It was the last glimpse they had of her.

Their father, too, had left them a long time ago. So, as usual, it was up to Dicey, the eldest, to take care of everything, to make all the decisions, feed them, find places to sleep. But above all, Dicey would have to make sure to avoid the authorities who would split them up and place them in foster homes. She was only thirteen, but all the responsibility fell on her to find an adult they could trust, someone who would take them in and love them. Those were Dicey's hopes.
