Thank you very much. I'm looking forward to reading it.

That's what it's about: We are in Kigali, Rwanda's capital. Angel Tungaraza, a thoughtful and empathic lady (similar to Mma Ramotswe) runs a small business: baking cakes for other people for special occasions. But she is not only the cake specialist, she also listens to her customers' problems.

I liked reading the book very much. There are small problems in people's life, but also big ones. Social problems of a wide range are told, too. And Angel is a warm hearted character. She would be a friend of Mma Ramotswe. The books are written in an equal style.

Going to the 2nd book summer at tigerle and husky's.

I took it at the book summer in Kürnbach. Still need a book from an African author for a challenge. And the German version of this book was regularly offered in the German forum as a ring. So it might be highly recommended. I'm curious about reading it.

Edit 5 February 2017: I already read it at the end of 2016. Nice, but not overwhelming with some lenghts. A film of the story would be great. I would like to see all those cakes. I never read a book playing in Ruanda before, so this was a good experience.

Thank you very much, YogiSchoko, for sending this! It's one of those books that has kind of been on my radar for a while, but I've never actually read it. So I'm very pleased with it.

This is a great story, and I'd love to see it made into a movie, if only to see the beautiful cake decorations! Thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you for sharing!

This was a very enjoyable read! I agree with the previous readers that this would be awesome to see in movie form with all the vibrant cakes and characters. Angel is a lovely main character bringing together a network of people from different backgrounds and allowing the reader a glimpse into many different lives. As a Tanzanian having recently moved to Rwanda, Angel lends an understanding ear to her customers, many of which find it easier to confide in someone who is enough of an insider to understand the local traditions and topics, but enough of an outsider to not be too entangled in the local history. Additionally, her role as a baker allows Angel insights into a range of social classes as different customers tell their stories when ordering. I also liked that the book does not shy away from difficult topics like AIDS and the Rwandan genocide, yet without foregrounding them and without reducing any of the characters to their roles as victims or perpetrators, instead showing the complexities and variety of responses across different people as they go about their everyday activities - and of course as they celebrate a wide range of special occasions involving beautiful and extraordinary cakes.

Arrived safely. Thank you very much. I look forward to reading it.

at first, I was a bit irritated by the childish writing and the profusion of words in Swahili ( a glossary would have been nice ) , but I gradually became interested in the characters and their stories. Although it makes for a rather light reading, it points out all the tragedies Rwanda has been facing : genocide, aids, povery and illiteracy...
